Head Into The Alternative Green Tunnel
In the area of North Carolina and Georgia, no trail is more infamous than the southern terminus of the Appalchain Trail. At certain times of the year, however, that area becomes a stampede of voracious new hikers.
Instead, head over to the Bartram Trail where you can explore the footsteps of William Bartram from the 1700’s. It was voted by readers of Backpacker Magazine to be the No.1 U.S. long distance trail for solitude.
The trail itself is still evolving but currently includes over 115 miles of trail.
When to Go
In late March and April, the southern Appalachians become loaded with hikers heading north. Avoid that herd at all costs if you’re seeking solitude and peace.
Since the Bartram Trail is relatively short, you can head out just about any time of the year. While it’s true that the trail is pretty “southern” it’s still at risk for freak ice and snow storms so keep an eye on the weather if you’re braving the trail during winter months.
Getting to the Bartram Trail
This area of the country is quite heavily populated and developed. Airports, gas stations, and motels are littered around like candy wrappers in a windy New York alleyway.
Flying into Atlanta, GA will likely have the best airfare from most locations. Then rent a car and head northeast to the trailhead at the border of GA and SC.
