Update on long term use of the 680T.
After two years this device failed to start up correctly.
Garmin support had me take out the micro SD memory card and the unit now starts correctly.
After two years that memory card got flaky it seems.
This is actually a pretty nifty device, it acquires GPS signal pretty fast and it seems to hold on to it very well. The screen has been improved, and it comes preloaded with TOPO maps. 8GB of memory, 4GB is already used up.
You get one year of satellite imagery you can download. This is a very cumbersome process. You have to download Garmin Basecamp, then you can only sync a very limited amount of satellite images each time you sync, so you end up repeating yourself, And sometimes the sync fails.
Once you have a satellite image, there is no easy way to toggle satellite vs topo map. It doesn't really have the concept of layers.
The camera is ok, by no means impressive.
This all sounds great, exactly what I need in a GPS device. Why not get it?
Take a look at what you have in your hand all day long? Your smartphone. This phone probably has at least 32GB of memory in it.
I have an iPhone 7. It has 128GB of memory in a rugged case. I use two applications, Gaia GPS ($19.95) and onXHunt GPS Maps ($29.95/year). The phone itself is water resistant, the case makes it suitable for the outdoors.
I can draw topo lines on my satellite imagery, I can get excellent battery life if I go in Airplane mode, but leave the GPS on. Works all day long.
I carry a $20 backup battery that charges my phone at least 2-3 times, and thus, I have at least as good, if not better battery life than the Garmin's 16 hours.
I don't need special software to sync my maps between a computer and the device. onXHunt syncs it to the cloud, and then I can use my browser to annotate my maps. Downloading satellite imagery I can do directly from the device, and I can download a lot more, because of the memory in my phone.
In short, the Garmin Montana 680t, is at least 5 years old technology if you look at it from a user's perspective. It is slow, it is outdated, and it simply doesn't hold up. It definitely does not warrant a price tag of a smart phone.
Let's say this device was $150, would I use it. Maybe....if I didn't want to expose my phone I would do it. But hey, they all my map data would still have to be synced with the same computer, rather than the cloud. I can download onXHunt on any device, and all my waypoints and tracks will be right there. Surely Garmin could have done better on that end.
But for $519? Why not just add $100 and get the latest iPhone, with that you can get software that will blow you away, and hey, you still have all the other functionality you need. Including a phone.
PS. I had one device that had an issue starting up when I was in the field. I returned it, Amazon promptly replaced it. But while I was waiting, I was researching my options, and realized, my life can be so much easier just using an application on my phone. So the replacement was sent back.
