This folding trowel/spade comes with its own sheath with a belt loop is a great tool for backpackers. The orange Coghlan trowel was my go-to for a long time, since it's cheap and does the job. However, after breaking a few of them I tried out a few stainless steel folding trowels and this one is the best I've come across. Lightweight, comfortable, and sturdy, it can perform other tasks the Coghlan one can't, such as moving coals from the fire to a stove. It weighs a bit more than the plastic trowels, but it will last a lot longer and is worth every penny.
Unfortunately, the second vendor erroneously sent me the "LITE" model shovels instead of the "PRO" model shovels I ordered; and when contacted, sincerely apologized and advised me that, in fact, they did NOT carry the "PRO" model at all; so I returned them for a refund. But I still didn't have the two "PRO" model folding shovels I was seeking.
By now I doubted whether the "PRO" model shovels really existed in the universe, so I contacted UST/Revere Products to try to find out. They assured me the "PRO" model does indeed exist, and suggested I check with our local REI store to see if they had the "PRO" model available. I did, REI did, I went, and at long last I have what I sought - two UST U-Dig-It "PRO" Stainless Steel Folding Shovels. They are solid, hefty, strong, and very well-made right here in the good old USA (in Oregon, or so I was told by the UST/Revere rep.)
Since these folding shovels are to be kept in our Bug-Out-Bags, and since we might not be able to replace them right away if they failed, we need to trust that they won't break. I am happy to say that after testing these two "PRO" model shovels I feel confident that they can withstand the moderate use I envision.
Bottom Line: I do recommend the American-made UST U-Dig-It "PRO" Stainless Steel Folding Shovel, but I definitely do not recommend the Chinese-made "LITE" model. Be sure you order AND RECEIVE the "UST U-Dig-It PRO Stainless Steel Folding Shovel" model. Do not waste your time and/or money on the "LITE" model, no matter how inexpensive it may be.
I haven't actually used mine as I'm just collecting gear for when I find time to go camping (probably a couple more years from now). But when I hold this one and unfold it, I can feel the quality... it's built like a WW2 tank. It weighs 6oz. Though I just ordered the Titanium Deuce Scoop from Dutchware because it's 22 grams, I'll still keep this one around as a redundancy in case my other, more fancy, poop scoop gets lost or stolen.
Not really much to say about it other than to make sure yours says Made In USA on the concave side of the shovel... and that it's a pretty rugged and solid investment. Also, I could totally see someone adding some paracord to the handle, probably wouldn't be a bad idea to make it that much more comfortable.... and that it would probably be a good gift for that prepper guy/gal in your life who isn't a gram weenie. Add some neon orange, neon green, OD green, brown, black, or camo paracord to it and they'll love ya for it.... good for making a Dakota hole fire and burying poop.
The one nit-picky part of the shovel that I do not like is the way the handle can close if you squeeze it too hard. In addition, if you have a real strong grip you can take the handle off. I don't see that being too big of a problem - if you know about.
The product today, made in China, does not operate except doubtfully even on initial unstressed use. The original inventor must hate the present-day negative evolved result of the innovation. This was a neat product gone very wrong. Sad to observe.

This UST trwel feels like it will last a lot longer.
It is a light and compact contruction, so it does not take a lot of space in your backpack. The blade will help you to dig a hole just by sticking it into the ground and twisting it. It is very sturdy and easy to fold.
Obviously you can use it for more than dig a cat hole. I have chipped wood with it to make tinder, and you may use it as reflecting mirror for attracting someones attention.
All in all a sure recommendation.
