It all started with leaky boots, clunky backpacks and tents not fit for your dog.
It’s no wonder why few people ever went backpacking for fun prior to World War Two. Back then, trekking was done only out of necessity.
Before the Main Hunting Shoe came along in 1912, hunters just put up with drenched feet as they stalked their prey. And soldiers heading into battle during the American Civil War had no choice but to suffer inside drafty, leaky ‘pup tents’ while on the move.
But thankfully, advancements in gear technology during the 20th century has made it easier to thrive in the wilderness overnight. In fact, even the past 10-15 years have seen new innovations (like cuben fibre) to make backpacks, tents and boots more comfortable and lightweight.
Now, I’m not saying newer is always better. But I do think it’s important to recognize real advances in gear technology. Because better equipment can often mean a better experience while exploring the outdoors.
And that’s why I created the infographic below. Tell me what you think about it in the comment section.
